Malaysiafest @ Sydney '06

Sept 3 2006. the date was set. the final show beckoned.

Joget Melayu troupe goes to Malaysiafest (M-fest), held at Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour, Sydney [ which is NOT the capital of Australia as reported in TheStar:Education on 10th Sept. oh, we made an appearance in the news too...]

this was certainly the best performance we ever had... from choreography to the turnout we had and of course, the execution of all our elegant dance moves. it's really great to have journeyed with the joget team of 8 - 4 guys 4 girls, 4 chinese 4 malay, 2 guys and 2 girls each. i'l definitely remember how we first choreographed our first dance for the MSO Malam Kenduri '06. Back then, everyone contributed significantly to the development of our prototype dance, our very first performance. Our successful performance led us to being invited to perform at Malaysia Night, the finale dinner for the annual MASCA (Malaysian Students' Council of Australia) National Conference & Games (NCG) held in the ACT this year. It was our performance that night (14 July) that caught the attention of the M-fest organisers who were in attendance during that dinner. When Hana.Mai told us about the invitation.. we were all ecstatic, " We might be going to Sydney to perform!"

No news from the M-fest organisers for the next few weeks. International Ball (12 Aug ), organised by the ANU International Students' Department (ISD) came along and we were again invited to perform for that night. 2 of our members couldn't perform, so it wasnt a full team that night but we still pulled off an impressive show and we even tried a new introduction incorporating a few 'silat' moves.

Mid-Semester exams came, and I saw myself trying to study at the eleventh hour again... had not been able to really concentrate on study and discipline myself to get on with work. Rushed a rehearsal on the Friday before the event, settled all our costume matters and we're off to Sydney the next day.

Feels quite good sometimes to be invited to perform... we're given close to VIP-class treatment, especially since we made the effort to travel all the way down to sydney from canberra. the journey we had together, starting from our humble beginnings on MSO Malam Kenduri till this grand event... simply unforgettable. 4 months... and every performance is slightly modified although largely similar. sydney trip was also an opportunity for the group to really get together and bond.. having meals together especially, and going to circular quay to snap photos at 11pm! me, eugene and hana.jon even stayed up all night till the next day to go to coogee beach to catch the morning sunrise. awesome experience.

after m-fest, spent another 3 days in sydney with friends from bruce. fantastic gastronomic experience =) lots of wonderful memories, lots of thoughts, lots of moments to cherish and ponder upon in the future.

sydney trip was a blast
